Heroes in Holten

Before we told anyone that M had applied for a job in Holland I was talking to my mom and I said if you could go anywhere in the world where would you go? To my complete surprise she says: Holland. (At this point I’m thinking ok she can read my mind!!!) But then she explains to me that it’s the only place she wants to go because my grandmother’s brother (her uncle) died there in world war 2 and is buried in Holland. It was my grandmother’s dream to travel here and visit her brother’s grave, but she passed away before getting to do so. I think that it’s no small coincidence that we ended up here and I was so very happy to be able to go with my mom and my aunt to pay our respects and visit my great uncle’s grave in the Canadian war cemetery in Holten. After 4 different trains and 1 taxi ride down a dirt road we finally arrived there. It was beautiful, a real sanctuary. The grounds are really well maintained and the landscape is gorgeous, little benches to sit on, flowers everywhere, they’ve done a great job. We had nice weather and the birds were chirping from the moment we got there and throughout the afternoon. Thank you to the committee for keeping it up for so long, and for honoring the brave men and women that gave their life for us.
