Silent and Still
Today is Remembrance day. As I got off the train on my way home from work an announcement was made in the Leiden Centraal station that at 8pm two minutes of silence would be observed to honor those who fought in the war. All trains stopped and shops closed their doors and everyone just stood there silent. As I stood there I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude and guilt. I’ve never felt any fear for my life or pain or hunger or my rights threatened and I think it’s easy to forget and take for granted the fact that this isn’t the case for most people and I have this because someone else fought for it.
